The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters in Anambra state Hon. Tony-Collins Nwabunwanne has said that plans are in place for Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo to constitute the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) for the conduct of local government elections in the state.

The commissioner who stated this at the ASATU complex Awka shortly after being decorated as the Grand Commander and National Ambassador of ASATU, explained that within a short while there would be transition committees that would be in office for a period of one year after which the governor will constitute ANSIEC for the conduct of local council elections.

The commissioner said that the Head of Service of every local government has taken over and that the governor has shown full commitment to taking everything back to the local governments and the grassroots level for constant and consistent activities therein.

Nwabunwanne however recalled that in past administrations virtually all sources of revenues for local governments came from the state government but emphasized that the present administration was determined to give local governments their original places in the polity.

He also observed that local government workers were no longer coming to work due to lack of necessary paraphernalia to work with, stressing that Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo will provide all the necessary things needed to motivate local government workers to embrace their jobs again and resuscitate the local government system in Anambra state.

The commissioner noted that the promotions, gratuities and other incentives for local government workers will become active again and the local government system will be alive again and the burden on state will reduce drastically, adding that the monthly sanitation of the old will go back to the local governments.

He said, ” Let every local government chairman account for his or her own cleanliness and development in the local government. That is the way the Governor wants it this time. And that is the way Anambra state will have value for their taxes. ”

The commissioner maintained that Anambra local government system will not collapse instead Governor Soludo has rekindled hope and believe in the local government system.
