Police Explains How Young Man, Uchenna Okafor Died at Awkuzu Police Station After His Arrest

Recently, a teenager, Uchenna Okafor alongside two other boys were arrested on the 23rd of December 2022, by the Police and according to the account given by the Police, the boys were suspected armed robbers who had robbed an unnamed victim who later identified them, ANAMBRAPEOPLE reports.

Sadly, Uchenna died in Awkuzu Divisional Police Headquarters days after his arrest and this development has led some people to start pointing accusing fingers at the Police over his death.

In a recent report, the Public Relations officer of the Anambra state Police command, Tochukwu Ikenga has given an explanation on how the young man died in their custody.

According to him, on the fateful day on Wednesday, 4th of January 2023, Uchenna was in the cell when he suddenly woke up and started behaving abnormally. Ikenga said that Uchenna started hitting his head on the wall until he slumped. Police officers were said to have rushed him to the hospital where he was pronounced dead by the doctors on duty.

He said: “The other suspects in the police cell said that while they were sleeping, Uchenna, started acting abnormally. He screamed and hit his head on the wall before he slumped. He was taken to the hospital and was confirmed dead by the doctor.”

The Police officer further revealed that an autopsy test will be carried out soon on the deceased and they will make their findings public after they are done with Investigation.
