Open letter to Mr. President: Urgent call for completion of 2023 Census process

Dear President Bola Tinubu, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to bring your attention to the crucial need to make proclamation for the completion of the 2023 Population and Housing Census process without further delay.

It goes without mentioning that if the population and housing census fails to take place within the next few months, information that has already been gathered across the country would become stale and if the exercise which neared its completion before it was suspended pending your assumption of office is not completed within the shortest possible time, it could mean that it would be started anew and the money already spent would be a waste. No nation can afford such an avoidable waste.

As a concerned citizen, I believe that a comprehensive and accurate population census is imperative for the betterment of our country and the effectiveness of governmental policies.

A population census plays a fundamental role in understanding the structure, growth, and demographics of a nation. It provides vital data that is crucial for making informed decisions related to public policy, resource allocation, economic development, and social welfare.

By statistically representing our population, a census allows us to ensure equitable distribution of resources and services, tackle disparities, and promote the overall well-being of our citizens.

With the passage of time, Nigerian society is continuously evolving, and it is crucial that our governance and policy-making keep up with these changes. The population census would enable us capture accurate and up-to-date information, facilitate evidence-based decision-making processes. This will help to ensure that our governments’ actions accurately reflect the needs, challenges, and aspirations of our population.

Furthermore, a comprehensive census strengthens our ability to plan for the future. It provides insight into trends, enabling us to anticipate shifts in population distribution, monitor urbanization patterns, and identify areas requiring increased infrastructure and services.

By understanding the population dynamics, we can proactively invest in education, healthcare, housing, transportation, and other essential services, ensuring the sustained growth and development of our nation.

Moreover, an accurate census holds immense significance for fair representation in political processes.

A country’s political power allocation, legislative districts, and electoral processes are closely tied to population data.

Therefore, conducting the meticulously planned and executed population census which the 2023 Cenus has already set the stage for would ensure fair representation and help maintain the democratic principles on which our nation is founded.

In the light of the foregoing reasons, I earnestly request that the Federal Government commits to the completion of the 2023 Population and Housing Census without further delay.

The data gleaned from such an undertaking will not only strengthen the government’s ability to serve and cater to the needs of our citizens effectively but also enable us to plan and build a prosperous and inclusive future for all.

I am confident that by prioritizing the collection of comprehensive population data, our government will demonstrate its commitment to evidence-based decision-making, socio-economic development, and responsible governance.

Thank you for considering this matter of utmost importance. I, as a concerned citizen, eagerly look forward to a positive response and the government’s proactive dedication to conducting a population census before the year runs out.

Sincerely,
James Ibechi
