The Dennis Memorial Grammar School Onitsha in Anambra State is on track to becoming the wealthiest secondary school in Nigeria, according to a reliable source.
The school’s alumni association is aiming to raise $2.5 million for the school endowment.
DMGS Onitsha, founded in 1925, is the oldest grammar school in Igboland and one of the oldest secondary schools in the region.
In November 2025, the school will mark its 100th anniversary, and the alumni association is sparing no effort to make the event unforgettable.
They are mobilizing former students and their acquaintances to raise $2.5 million before the alumni celebration.
The purpose of the endowment fund is to provide a long-term solution to the school’s financial challenges. With these funds, the school will be self-sustainable without external support.
Remarkably, within a short period, they have managed to raise approximately $500,000, and there is a prospect of reaching the target before the 100th anniversary.
No other government-owned secondary school in Nigeria has ever raised such an impressive amount of money in its history.
The goal is for DMGS Onitsha to become Nigeria’s equivalent of Phillips Exeter Academy.
Phillips Exeter is the most well-endowed secondary school in the US where alumni association has raise more than 1 billion Dollars for the school.
When achieved in 2025, the school will stand as Nigeria’s most well-endowed secondary school.
Dennis Memorial Grammar School Onitsha has produced distinguished individuals such as Professor Kenneth Dike, Professor Kodilinye, Professor Alexander Animalu,Prof Ilochi Okafor, SAN,Dr. Ernest Azudialu-Obiejesi,Dr Prosper Igboeli, Dr Tim Menakaya, Professor Beze Adogu, and many more.

The writers naive assumption or claim that DMGS Onitsha founded in 1925 is the oldest school in Igboland is a misrepresentation of fact. Methodist College Uzuakoli in the present day Abia State was founded in 1923. A Google fact check would have revealed this to the writer.
He said Grammar School pls
The writer said its the oldest grammar school and not the oldest school. Read well bro
The writer said it is the oldest Grammar school in Igboland and one of the oldest Secondary schools in the region. It didn’t say the school is the oldest Secondary school. Pls read again.
If we want to discuss ‘schools’ generally in Igbo land, St. Monica’s Ogbunike 1896, Awka Training College 1904! will also come in. The writer meant ‘grammar school’. Any school in Igbo land that started before 1925 did not start off as a secondary school with grammar and Western Curriculum. If it presently does, then it must have converted along the line. DMGS was the first experiment with English curriculum East of the Niger (South East).
Didn’t you know the meaning of grammar school? Mr man….are we talking about mission school here….without mentioning St. Charles Secondary School….
I want to be honorary alumnus
The efforts of the DMGS alumni to mark the school’s centenary anniversary with a massive ongoing centenary project is nothing short of an indication that there’s strength in unity. I commend everyone who’s given selflessly to the reinvigoration of DMGS Onitsha to remain a haven for standard learning, and sculpturing of resourceful persons and sound minds.
The writer wrote that “DMGS Onitsha, founded in 1925, is the oldest grammar school in Igboland and one of the oldest secondary schools in the region”.
He stressed that its the oldest grammar school in Igboland, so its now up to anyone to indicate if Methodist College Uzuakoli in the present day Abia State was also a grammar school for the writer to be wrong.

Some comments here are so off beat. Forget the year established, be concerned about the establishment of the endowment fund. That’s the main point of the article.

Check your Records, the Alumnis of College of the Immaculate Conception (C.I. C) Enugu has exceeded that with the completion of the Multipurpose Sport Centre that was commissioned last year. Prior to that the Alumni built a 1000 capacity Multipurpose Hall Centre powered by Solar followed by the completion of a 420 bed Two storey hostel block Powered by solar in addition to retrofitting all the classrooms among other endowments.
Groundbreaking! That school has trained a lot of graduates, if everyone who attended DMGS gave the equivalent of $50, they can reach their goal in 1-2 years.
