3 Most Respected Traditional Rulers in Anambra State

The traditional institution has recently come under attack not just in Igboland but in the entire country. Some governors abuse their power in issuing certificates of recognition to traditional rulers, especially when their political opinions differ from the government. This issue is prevalent across Nigeria, including Igboland, where traditional rulers are often removed from their positions.

Unfortunately, Anambra experiences even worse treatment, where even conferring Chieftaincy titles can lead to sanctions against a traditional ruler. Recently, the Anambra State government suspended the traditional rulers of Ojoto, Neni, and Nawfia for conferring titles on perceived political enemies of the Governor. This has resulted in sanctions against them. Analysts argue that some of these traditional rulers have diminished the respect of their positions. Thus, we are seeing fewer traditional rulers like late Igwe Osita Agwuna of Enugwu-Ukwu,Igwe Nwafor Ugochukwu of Umunze, Igwe Peter Ezenwa of Oba, Igwe Ezenwa of Abagana.

However, there are still esteemed traditional rulers in Anambra who are deeply respected due to their demeanor and conduct.

Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe

Igwe Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe: The Obi of Onitsha embodies elegance and influence. He is highly educated, well-exposed, and carries himself with utmost dignity. Having held powerful positions in the corporate world, Obi has brought great respect to his kingdom. He is among the top four most respected traditional rulers in Nigeria and the most respected in Anambra.

Igwe Peter Anugwu

Igwe Peter Anugwu: Igwe Mbaukwu is a revered traditional ruler. He may not speak frequently, but when he does, his words carry significant weight. He also serves on the board of several prominent companies, showcasing his vast network and connections. In 2006, he played a pivotal role in saving former Governor Chris Ngige from abduction. His timely intervention and influential outreach prevented Ngige’s removal, earning him even more respect. Additionally, he holds the intimidating title of Eze Amusu (the Witch King).

Nnewi itself is a highly respected town in Igboland due to the entrepreneurial prowess of the indigenes . Consequently, his respectful treatment by the successful people of Nnewi sets an example for the entire Anambra community, which also accords him the same level of admiration.
