In a significant move towards strengthening local governance system, Anambra State House of Assembly has passed the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission Bill into law.
This move paves way for the much-anticipated local government elections and setting a robust legal framework for their conduct.
The bill, which received support from the legislators, aims to empower the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC) with the authority and resources necessary to oversee the local government elections.
The bill will come into force on 5th June, 2024, immediately it is assented to by the governor
The bill was read for the third time by the Speaker, Right Honourable Somtochukwu Udeze and it received broad support from the lawmakers,
Recall that yesterday, the bill passed second reading, where lawmakers expressed optimism that the development would enhance democratic governance at the grassroots level by enabling citizens to elect leaders who are directly accountable to them.
