National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has charged Corps members to view their different cultures and traditions as bridges that connect them to shared identity and not as barriers.

Anambra state Coordinator, Mrs Blessing Ekene Iruma gave the advice during the 2024 Batch B Stream I Cultural Carnival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe NYSC orientation camp, Umuawulu/Mbaukwu in Awka South Local Government Area of the state.

She said coming together and appreciating traditions and customs of different ethnic groups offered the corps members opportunity to celebrate the unity they enjoyed as Nigerians.

She added that the event served as a testament to the Scheme’s commitment to promoting national unity and integration.

She said, “The NYSC Cultural Carnival is a celebration of the rich cultural diversity that exists within our great nation. It is a platform where the ten platoons in camp come together to showcase the unique aspects of our diverse ethnic groups.

“Today, each platoon will represent one of the approximately 250 ethnic groups in our country, highlighting various elements of their culture, such as dance, cuisine, history, marriage, and fashion etc.

“This carnival is more than just a display of cultural heritage; it is a powerful demonstration of our collective strength and resilience as a nation.

“By coming together and appreciating the traditions and customs of different ethnic groups, we celebrate the unity that binds us as Nigerians.

“We recognize that our differences are not barriers, but rather bridges that connect us to a shared identity.

“Through this carnival, we aim to foster a sense of belonging and understanding among our corps members. It is an opportunity for us to learn from one another, to break down stereotypes, and to build lasting friendships that transcend ethnic boundaries.

“By embracing the richness of our diverse cultures, we pave the way for a brighter and more harmonious future for our nation.

“Let us remember that the NYSC Cultural Carnival is not just a one-day event, but a catalyst for long-lasting change. As we witness the vibrant displays of our corps members today, let us carry this spirit of unity and integration beyond this camp and into our communities.

“Together, we can build a Nigeria where diversity is celebrated, and every citizen is valued.”

Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Mr Don Onyenji while congratulating the corps members, urged them to take advantage of the hospitality disposition of the state to integrate with the people.

He restated commitment of Governor Chukwuma Soludo-led administration to ensuring peaceful and safe environment for the corps members throughout their service year.
