Association of Professional Women Engineering of Nigeria (APWEN) has restated its commitment to breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes and providing the support and resources needed for success.
The National President, Engr Adebisi Osim stated this on Friday during the STEM for All programme hosted by South-East Zone held at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, themed, “Promoting Inclusivity and Diversity in Engineering for a Sustainable World”.
She said the body, through mentorship programs, scholarships, workshops and advocacy, was paving way for next generation of engineers who would lead with innovation and integrity.
According to her, the programme was born out of her passionate drive towards advancing the Engineering profession with young ones, especially those in secondary schools and tertiary institutions.
She said, “STEM for All” program is designed to inspire, educate, and empower students and professionals alike, fostering a culture of inclusivity and excellence in engineering.
“Today’s theme is not just a topic of discussion but a clarion call to action. We are reminded of the profound impact that engineering has on shaping our world and the imperative to ensure that this field is open and accessible to all, regardless of gender, background, or circumstances.
“Engineering is the cornerstone of innovation and development. It drives the solutions to some of our most pressing global challenges, from climate change to infrastructure development and beyond.
“Yet, for engineering to truly serve society and address these challenges effectively, it must reflect the diverse perspectives and talents of the communities it aims to benefit.
“At APWEN, we believe that diversity is not just a value; it is a necessity. When we promote inclusivity in engineering, we unlock a wealth of ideas, creativity, and solutions that can drive sustainable development.
“We recognize that a diverse engineering workforce is better equipped to understand and tackle the multifaceted issues that our world faces today.”
While urging participants, especially the students to embrace the opportunity to learn, network and envision their future in engineering, Osim expressed optimism that their passion, determination and diverse perspectives as driving forces would propel the society toward sustainable development.
“To the faculty, industry leaders, and professionals here today, your role in mentoring, supporting, and advocating for diversity in engineering cannot be overstated. Together, we can create pathways for success and build a community where every individual has the opportunity to contribute and succeed.
“Let us make today a celebration of diversity and a commitment to inclusivity. Let us work together to ensure that engineering is a field where everyone, regardless of their background, can find their place and make a difference.
“By promoting inclusivity and diversity in engineering, we are not only enriching the profession but also paving the way for a more sustainable and equitable world,” she added.
Declaring the event open, Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Joseph Ikechebelu underscored the place of science, technology and mathematics in all spheres of life, urging the students to maximize the opportunity to improve their knowledge and skills.
Ikechebelu, represented by Dean of Faculty of Engineering, Prof Solomon Nwigbo explained that life would be extremely difficult without STEM.
“Science and technology are languages, just as English is. Any country that aspires greatness doesn’t joke with STEM. Unfortunately, Nigeria is not doing well in that area, reason the western world is ahead of us,” he said.
Highpoint of the event was science challenge competition on creation of a balloon car by six schools, namely Nnamdi Azikiwe University High School Awka, Rev. Fr. Aaron Ekwueme Memorial Secondary School Amawbia, St. Patrick’s College Awka, St. Lawrence Splendid Secondary School Mbaukwu, Community High School Awka Eze and Blossom Fount College Iyiagu, Awka.
