A 23-year-old man, Chibuike Okafor, was apprehended by his friend while attempting to steal electric wires at a construction site in Ezimezi, Amawbia, Awka South Local Government Area, on Sunday night.
Chibuike, a resident of Egbengwu in Njikoka Local Government Area, was caught by his friend, who was serving as a night watchman at the site, around 11pm.
Our correspondent gathered that Chibuike had previously visited his friend at the site, where they had shared convivial moments, unaware of his true intentions.
He was held by his friend and a site worker until Monday morning.
In a stunning confession, Chibuike admitted to stealing electric wires from the site twice before.
He claimed a friend introduced him to the illicit activity and revealed that an Hausa dealer was their buyer.
Originally from Amanuke in Awka South Local Government Area by birth , Chibuike disclosed that he was formerly a tricycle operator.
Residents expressed outrage and disappointment over Chibuike’s actions.
As of press time, arrangements were being made to hand him over to the police.
The incident underscores growing concerns about theft and vandalism at construction sites in the area.
