Hiding your health status exposes you to unnecessary risks – NYSC DG warns corps members

Director General, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General ,YD Ahmed has urged corps members to follow instructions carefully to avoid accidents.

He emphasized the need to minimize travels and stay at their Places of Primary Assignments for safety.

Brigadier General Ahmed gave the advice while addressing the 2024 Batch C Stream 1 Corps Members, at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Umuawulu/Mbaukwu, Awka South Local Government Area.

He however advised them to disclose their health status to prevent unnecessary risks during their service year, while those with health issues should always make use of the camp’s medical facilities.

Describing the scheme as a symbol of national unity and integration, the DG highlighted the unity fostered by the NYSC programme, noting how corps members were are united under the NYSC uniform despite their diverse backgrounds.

“The chant ‘Corper wee !!’ encapsulates this unity, with the parade ground serving as a symbol of national cohesion,” he remarked.

Ahmed further acknowledged challenges faced during the three-week orientation period but encouraged the corps members to embrace the experience, reminding them that the NYSC phase is crucial in shaping their future successes.

He also underscored the importance of the lectures introduced during the orientation period , which he said were designed to benefit all participants.

He further spoke about opportunities available through the Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme which attracts partnerships with financial institutions offering grants and loans to aspiring entrepreneurs.

The DG cited success stories of former çorps members who became business owners, encouraging the current batch to pursue legitimate means of self-sufficiency.

Addressing financial concerns, the number one corps member nationwide reassured them that an increase in their stipends had been approved by the Federal Government and would be implemented soon.

He also reminded them of additional incentives provided by state governments and other Corps Employers.

On discipline, the NYSC boss urged corps members to adhere strictly to the NYSC Bye-Laws, warning that any involvement in protests would lead to severe consequences, including an unpaid extension of their service year.

He called on them to maintain professionalism, proper appearance, and carry their identity cards at all times.

He further praised the corps members for their exemplary behavior and gifted them two cows as a token of appreciation for their commendable conduct, much to their delight.
