Retired directors in Anambra State are demanding a harmonized and upward review of pensions, giving the Prof Chukwuma Soludo-led government February 2025 deadline to act.

The demand was made at a meeting of the Association of Retired Directors held at Basino Hotel in Awka, attended by 22 members.

According to the communiqué issued after the meeting, signed by the association’s chairman, Sir Fidelis Ezeike, and secretary, Sir Azuka Okeke, “The State Government is yet to sign the negotiated new Minimum Wage Salary Table that will inform the Constitution of Committee that will negotiate for the new Pension Table in line with extant situation.”

They called on the state government and all lovers of retirees to expedite action in setting up the committee.

“By this, we call on State Government and all lovers of retirees to inform the government to expedite action in setting up the said Committee,” the communiqué stated.

Consequently, the retired directors have given government until mid-February 2025 to act, after which they’ll begin writing letters to express their views.

“We resolved that with effect from Mid-February 2025 when we will hold our next meeting, if nothing is done in the increase in pensions, we will begin to write letters to make our views known to NUP, Government and other bodies we will deem fit,” the communiqué further stated.

The association expressed frustration with the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) for failing to provide them with the constitution that governs its operations, despite being financial members.

“We frown at the failure of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners to avail us the Constitution that governs its operations, which we, Retired Directors are financial members,” the communiqué added.

The association unanimously elected Dr. Dan Ifeatu Obele to represent them in the State Council of the NUP, and a letter will be written to the NUP in that regard.

The meeting resolved to continue striving for the welfare of its members and other retirees, and to act as a subtle pressure group seeking the common good of retirees.
