Anambra State Civic and Social Reformation Office (ANCISRO) has expressed worry over declining culture of obedience to law and order among citizens of the state.
Managing Director, Sir Chuka Nnabuife stated this on Monday during ANCISRO’s End-of-the-Year Forum themed, “Anambra Values… Marking Yuletide with the Solution Agenda”
He said Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision of a livable and prosperous homeland would be unrealizable where citizens ignore basic civic responsibilities.
He said the Agency was established to forestall increasing criminal activities, including arson, violence and other vices among the citizenry through education, enlightenment and informative ways, using all channels of social communication relevant to both the ordinary residents and elites.
He said, “The way we are going, we would not achieve a livable and prosperous homeland if we continue without law and order and keep ignoring our civic responsibilities. Anambra’s ultimate greatness depends on these.
“All through the ages in history, great societies never toyed with maintaining orderliness through upholding their laws and encouraging citizens as well as sojourners to live up to their civic duties.
“Without keenness for law and order, high sense of patriotism and such vital development factors as concern for the wellbeing of our land, genuine interest in our neighbours and hospitality, our land would not grow to a greater one.
“At best, we would get pockets of individual instances of richness but the larger society would remain impoverished. In such a situation, everyone would feel unconnected and the weak would feel increasingly, alienated, making them to infest their angst on society in the form of disenchantment, engaging in criminal activities such arson, violence and other vices.
“In a bid to forestall these, the governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Charles Soludo CFR established the Anambra State Civic and Social Reformation Office (ANCISRO) on September 1, 2024.
“ANCISRO has its chores clearly cut out as the name stipulates. Its seeks to inspire and instill an enduring reformation of the values and social conduct of Ndi Anambra with the view of making the state livable and robustly prosperous.
“ANCISRO is a social orientation faculty in the Governor’s Office. In heed to Mr. Governor’s mission as stated in his ‘Manifesto of the People’ of Anambra, ANCISRO aspires to foster a socio-cultural renaissance that will make Anambra a land of great happy people in manner and means.
“Our tools are delivery of message in the manner that the everyday person native or resident in Anambra State will understand.
“We educate in enlightening way, we entertain in informative way and we use all channels of social communication that are relevant to both the ordinary street person and elites to mobilise ndị Anambra and get the populace and the government on the same page for the ultimate good of the state. We work to mainstream our noble culture and indigenous language.
“Anambra State’s government’s decision to set up ANCISRO comes timely, amid an unprecedented fast degeneration of values and sense of civic responsibility among our people. Our society’s values may never have dropped as low as we are witnessing currently. Greed, rage, crimes, killings, even suicide and unprecedented vices now mark the news and public discussions day by day.
“In a very absurd resort to escapism, many of our people now give hunger as a quick excuse and cover for almost all their misdemeanors, including those that are clear acts of character flaw and total disregard for the laws of the land and codes of social conduct.
“The situation has gone so bad that in homes, communities, including faith-based organisations such as churches, mosques, places of traditional worship and others where morals and ethics used to be the stronghold of teaching and orientation, how to get rich, quick has taken over.
“Youth organisations that orientate people towards social service, volunteerism and patriotism are now becoming extinct. The danger is becoming increasingly manifest in our communities, states and country as people now live as if in disregard of law and order. Citizens and residents now eschew patriotism and talk down the land as if they have other homeland.
“People fail and discourage others from performing their civic responsibilities such as doing things as basic as keeping their homes and environs clean, paying their taxes, being alert to harms that can affect them and their community such as joining hands with neighbours and state to check insecurity, being their neighbours keeper among other vital social and individual behaviours that used to make us who we are.
“If hitherto law and order as well as the sense of sharing and leaving no one behind which Gov. Soludo’s Solution Government emphasises have been the norm, across Nigeria as it should the chain of terrible, inexplicable deaths recorded last weekend across country, in the build-up to Christmas may not have happened.
“Even if tens of thousands of orderly persons besiege a place for whatever ever need, there would not be a stampede. Wherever there is a good sense of being one’s neighbour keeper, anyone working with a crowd, even if mammoth, would work visibly hard to ensure all persons’ safety. That is the kind of embarrassing situation, the success of offices like ANCISRO across country would check.
“The goal of ANCISRO is to achieve, in Anambra, a livable and prosperous homeland where none is left behind. Towards that target we sensitive and mobilise ndị Anambra.”
