Women from the 179 communities in Anambra State on Thursday embarked on peaceful demonstration to mourn late Mrs Blessing Nwaka, the woman burnt to death by her husband in Abagana, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.
The women took their protest to the office of the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare at Prof. Dora Akunyili Women Development Center Awka.
The protesters comprised of reputable women from different women associations including Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU led by the National President of ASATU Women Wing, Mrs Ify Okaro.
Okaro warned their male counterparts to handle their spouses with care and love as well as avoid situations capable of fuelling violence.
Also, representative of the Women Leaders of communities, Mrs Josine Unachukwu threatened to raze down houses of anyone that would kill their spouses again in the state.
Responding, Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs Ify Obinabo assured the women of the resolve of wife of the Governor, Mrs Nonye Soludo to ensure that justice took its full course.
She called on men to always report their wives to the ministry instead of taking laws into their hands.
The women who were visibly sad over the incident chanted, “marriage is not a do or die affair”, “anujuo must go”; and “stop killing women” as they continued their protest.
