Mainpower Electricity Distribution Limited (MEDL) has identified vandalism, energy theft and meter bypass as the major challenges facing the company, attributing them to the source of the huge revenue loss consistently recorded by the business.

Managing Director, Dr. Ernest Mupwaya disclosed this yesterday during an advocacy visit of the management on the Attorney General & Commissioner for Justice, Enugu State, Hon. Kingsley Udeh.

He said the visit was part of MEDL’s effort to galvanize support of critical stakeholders within its area of operations to cultivate strategic and sustainable relationships.

Mupwaya shared with the Attorney General the core operational objectives of MEDL, the challenges experienced in its operations and areas it would be needing assistance of the Ministry of Justice especially as it affects the speed of prosecution of apprehended vandals and enacting of stringent punishment for energy thieves.

“Vandalism, energy theft, and meter bypass are the major challenges facing the company, which are unfortunately the source of the huge revenue loss consistently recorded by the business,” he said.

The MEDL team equally thanked the Ministry of Justice for their exemplary support over the years and solicited continued assistance in that regard.

In his remarks, Hon. Udeh thanked the MEDL team for the visit and assured them of the Ministry’s commitment to providing the support needed to see the company succeed.

He equally acknowledged that the state government is a critical stakeholder, being the first state in the country to take steps towards creating a state-centric electricity market.

“We will do whatever it will take to encourage the growth of the electricity market in state and to ensure Mainpower succeeds in its business”.

He further emphasized that energy theft is criminal and with the states given power to legislate over the sector, the office of the Attorney General will support in that regard.
