The Anambra State Government has begun full enforcement of environmental laws across the state, with fines ranging from ₦20,000 to ₦5 million for offenders.
The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, disclosed this in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday. He said the enforcement covers individuals and corporate organisations, with penalties determined by the nature and severity of each offence.
According to the statement, all public and private buildings are required to have functional catchment pits, drainage systems, or other approved stormwater control measures. Buildings found without these facilities will attract sanctions.
The government also warned against improper waste disposal, including the dumping of sachet water nylons, PET bottles, plastics, and other refuse outside designated litter points. Dr. Mefor stated that anyone caught dumping waste on roads, expressways, or into drainages will be arrested and prosecuted.
He explained that penalties under the law range from ₦20,000 to ₦1 million for individuals, while corporate organisations face fines between ₦100,000 and ₦5 million.
The state government urged residents and businesses to comply with environmental regulations to avoid sanctions and support efforts to maintain a clean and safe environment.
