Ndiowu Community in Orumba North Local Government Area of Anambra State is embroiled in a controversy over the selection of a new traditional ruler.
The community had been without a monarch since 2015, and the recent declaration of Chief Chibuzor Okekeifi as Igwe-elect has sparked widespread protests.
The protesters, drawn from the four traditional quarters of Ndiowu, claim that the process leading to Okekeifi’s emergence was flawed, unconstitutional, and imposed against the collective will of the people.
They alleged that the election held on January 12, 2026, was conducted without following the community’s constitution and excluded women from voting.
The protesters presented several grievances, including the alleged disregard for the community’s rotational succession arrangement, which stipulates that the next monarch should come from Ufere village.
They also claim that the election was conducted using a secret ballot system, contrary to the community’s constitution, which prescribes Option A4.
Reacting over the issue, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon. Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, denied allegations of imposition and abuse of office, stating that the election process was driven largely by the community leadership.
However, the protesters accuse the Commissioner of subverting the collective will of the community by excluding women and adopting a secret ballot system.
The protesters have appealed to Governor Chukwuma Soludo to intervene and ensure a free, fair, and credible election.
They have also demanded an independent inquiry into the conduct of the Commissioner and the Orumba North Joint Security Force.
Meanwhile, the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Solo Chukwulobelu, has assured the protesters that the government will prioritize peace and fairness in resolving the matter. He has urged the community to maintain order and expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved.
However, the protesters have vowed to continue their opposition to the disputed selection, urging the government to respect their traditional governance and constitution.
The outcome of this controversy is still uncertain, as the government deliberates on the best course of action to resolve the dispute.
