The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 21-year-old Chiemerie Anieke, who is suspected of hacking his master, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwite, to death with the use of a pestle, in Onitsha, yesterday. The suspect, an apprentice of the deceased, was said to have used a pestle from his master’s kitchen on his master, leading to his death. According to reports, Mr. Ikechukwu Nwite’s death followed an altercation with his apprentice, Chiemerie, resulting from his staying out late at night, stealing money, and using drugs. Considering Chiemerie’s Abakaliki origin, the incident has triggered profiling of sorts, with some alleging a high proclivity to violence by people from Abakaliki.

In a statement by the Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police noted that “preliminary information reveals that the suspect was allegedly provoked by the manner in which the late Ikechukwu admonished him over his bad behavior, including pilfering money meant for the shop, staying out late at night, and taking drugs.”

The statement also clarified that the woman injured by Chiemerie with the same pestle reported on social media as Ikechukwu’s sister is actually his wife. According to the Police, “Ikechukwu’s wife was rescued and taken to the hospital, where she is currently responding to treatment”.

In the meantime, the Anambra State Police Command noted that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Awka.
