Students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH) School of Nursing in Nnewi, Anambra State, staged a protest on Tuesday following a sudden increase in their school fees.

The tuition for the 2025/2026 session has jumped from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000.

The students gathered at the campus, holding placards and chanting slogans against the steep hike.

Many said the increase is too high and that most of them cannot afford it under the current economic conditions.

The fee increase was announced in an internal memo dated 23 January 2026. NAUTH explained that the rise was necessary to improve facilities and cover increasing operational costs.

The 544% hike has caused outrage among students and Nigerians, who are already struggling with rising living costs and inflation in the countrMany described the increase as unfair and excessive.

This protest reflects a wider problem in Nigerian tertiary institutions, where annual inflation often exceeds 30%, making it harder for students to pay school fees. Similar disputes have been reported in other universities across the country.

NAUTH officials have reportedly started talks with student unions to find a possible solution. Meanwhile, the nursing students have vowed to continue their protest until their concerns are addressed.
