The Federal Government has identified several communities in Anambra State as high-risk areas in its latest flood alert, which affects 10 states across the country.
The warning, issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment, predicts heavy rainfall between April 8 and April 12, 2026.
In a notice dated April 8, the government listed Atani, Iyowa Odekpe, and Onitsha in Anambra State as communities likely to experience flooding, urging residents to take immediate precautionary measures.
The alert was signed by the Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department, Mr. Usman Bokani, who emphasized the need for heightened vigilance due to the vulnerability of the affected areas.
According to the report, other communities at risk include Afikpo and Nkalagu in Ebonyi State; Ayetoro and Ilaro in Ogun State; as well as Donga, Kwata Kanawa, Lau, Serti, Takum, and Yorro in Taraba State.
Also listed are Edor, Ikom, and Itigidi in Cross River State; Igumale in Benue State; Nworievbi, Okigwe, Otoko, and Owerri in Imo State; Oko Anara in Delta State; Port Harcourt in Rivers State; and Umuahia in Abia State.
The Federal Government advised residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, clear drainage channels, and relocate from high-risk zones where necessary.
Residents were further urged to stay updated through official weather forecasts and comply strictly with safety directives to safeguard lives and property.
Experts also noted that the adoption of Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) can enhance climate resilience, reduce carbon footprint, and improve crop yields and land productivity.
