The Anambra State Government has approved ₦640 million for market regeneration, education reforms, healthcare support and erosion control as part of resolutions reached at the State Executive Council (ANSEC) meeting held at the Light House, Awka.

The meeting, the third in the series, was held on June 22, 2026, where the council reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive governance and sustainable development through policies and projects aimed at strengthening the economy, protecting the environment and improving social services.

In a statement issued on Monday by the Commissioner for Information and Value Reformation, Dr Law Mefor, the council said “markets remain the largest sector of the state’s economy,” adding that “the regeneration of markets will continue” to ensure “clean, green, planned and sustainable communities.” It also expressed concern over traders who “cross barricades to display their wares on roads, causing traffic obstructions and safety hazards,” noting that “some markets will be relocated and walled off from major roads.”

The council further stated that erosion remains “the number one existential threat to Anambra State,” attributing it to human activities such as “stormwater from homes channelled into roads, building on flood channels, and indiscriminate felling of trees without replacement.” It said it would commence enforcement of the state environmental law mandating “every home to construct a catch-pit to reduce stormwater runoff to protect roads.”

On social intervention, the council resolved to sustain “free education and free ante-natal care, plus free delivery for pregnant women,” and approved a school adoption programme under the Public-Private-Community Partnership framework known as “SOLUDOZIE ANAMBRA,” through which individuals and corporate organisations are expected to support public schools.

It also approved a bill to regulate primary and secondary education in the state, which will prescribe “standards and minimum conduct for administrators of both private and public schools,” while curbing “exploitative and arbitrary levies, unnecessary ceremonies, and the practice of barring students from reusing textbooks.”

The council approved ₦237 million for the remodelling of Afouzo Market, Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area, awarded to Crystal Dove Construction Company Ltd, and ₦402.83 million for the supply of routine antenatal medicines and associated services under the state’s free maternal healthcare initiative, awarded to Jessy Pharmaceutical Company Ltd and Award Global Company Ltd.

The statement said the decisions reflect Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s commitment to building a “liveable and prosperous Anambra anchored on infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, law and order, and human capital advancement.”
