Information available to ANAMBRA PEOPLE has it that an unspecified number of people were reportedly killed and burned alive when gunmen attacked Eke Awgbu market square, a community in Orumba North local government area of Anambra.

An eyewitness account said the unknown gunmen were accosted by Agulu local security guards for terrorising their environs and were caught in Awgbu, where the angry mobs dealt with the unknown gun attackers in Eke Awgbu square.

The source stated that after the first gunmen were accosted by the Agulu local security at Awgbu, unknown to the Awgbu community, another set of unknown gunmen returned at about 9 p.m. yesterday, May 18, 2023, to raze down the market, burning people alive in their shops while also opening fire on individuals, killing many and sustaining injuries without any resistance from security forces.

This incident has thrown the community into darkness and mourning.

At the time of filling out this report, the number of casualties could not be confirmed. The situation remains fluid, and information is still being gathered. We are working diligently to assess the extent of any injuries or loss of life. Updates will be provided as more details emerge.
