In a recent statement, General Manager,Onitsha River Port, Wannes De Wit expressed his dedication to the development and growth of the Onitsha River Port in Nigeria. Speaking about the port’s potential, De Wit emphasized the benefits it offers for businesses both domestically and internationally.

One of the key advantages of the Onitsha Port, according to De Wit, is its ability to handle the barging and clearance of goods. This means that businesses can conveniently transport their goods via barges and have them cleared directly at the port.

Furthermore, De Wit highlighted that the Onitsha Port provides a direct export opportunity to other ports worldwide. This means that exporters in the region can bypass the congestion and delays often associated with larger ports and send their goods directly to international destinations. This will not only boost trade opportunities for local businesses but also position the Onitsha Port as a significant player in the global trade network.

Recognizing the importance of continuous improvement, De Wit announced plans to prioritize the dredging of the Onitsha Port. The ongoing dredging operations are aimed at maintaining and enhancing the port’s accessibility and navigability for larger vessels. By regularly dredging the port, it will be capable of accommodating larger shipments and attracting more international trade.

Federal Government focus on fostering the growth and efficiency of the Onitsha Port comes as part of a broader initiative to promote economic development and facilitate regional trade. As the second-largest inland port in Nigeria, the Onitsha Port plays a crucial role in connecting various regions within the country. By investing in its infrastructure and expanding its capabilities, the port aims to become a vital hub for both domestic and international trade, driving economic prosperity and job creation in the region.
