In a bid to revive and regulate the Igbo Apprenticeship System, also known as Igba Boi, the Anambra State House of Assembly has introduced the Anambra State Igbo Apprenticeship Bill 2024. The bill, which had its first reading at the plenary, aims to provide a framework for the regulation of Igba Boi and Trainee schemes in the state.
One of the objectives of the bill is to establish a database of individuals interested in participating in any of the apprenticeship schemes in the state. This will enable better oversight and regulation of the system. Additionally, the bill aims to provide a platform for the resolution of issues that may arise between parties involved in an apprenticeship scheme contractual relationship.
The bill also seeks to address the issue of abuse and wrongs against any of the parties in such relationships. It aims to discourage unethical practices and ensure fair treatment for all participants. Ultimately, the bill is expected to boost trade and commerce in the state.
The decline in popularity of the Igba Boi system in recent times can be attributed to several factors, including unresolved issues and allegations made by employers against apprentices. This has discouraged many youths from participating in the system, opting for alternative forms of employment.
To rectify this situation, the bill proposes a comprehensive framework that protects the rights of both apprentices (nwa Boi) and employers (oga). It also outlines the roles and responsibilities of parents, guardians, and the courts in resolving disputes between the parties involved.
If passed into law, the Anambra State Igbo Apprenticeship Bill 2024 is expected to make the Igba Boi system lucrative once again. To facilitate public input and scrutiny, copies of the bill are available for perusal upon request.
The bill is sponsored by Rt. Hon. Ejike Okechukwu, who emphasizes the commitment of the 8th assembly to enact laws that will positively impact and improve the lives of the people of Anambra State.
