In a recent Statistic supplied by one of the most reputable rating firms in Nigeria- Statisense, Lagos, Anambra, and Imo states have been listed as the most built-up states in Nigeria, showcasing significant urbanization. The report provided a comprehensive analysis of the percentage of area covered by human-made structures, major road and rail networks, as well as large homogeneous impervious surfaces, including parking structures, office buildings, and residential housing.
According to the report, Lagos topped the list with an astonishing 34.4% of its total area classified as built-up, solidifying its position as Nigeria’s economic powerhouse.
Imo state emerged as the second most built-up state, with 25.1% of its area covered by infrastructure. Imo boasts a thriving capital, Owerri, which features impressive residential housing, shopping centers, Hotels and an expanding transport system.
Anambra state secured the third position, with 23.5% of its area classified as built-up. With its commercial hub in Onitsha and its capital, Awka, Anambra has experienced significant growth recently in semi urban cities like Nnewi ,Oko, and Ekwulobia. The state boasts numerous residential areas, infrastructure, and a well-connected road network.
The report also detailed the progress made in other states across Nigeria. Akwa Ibom ranked fourth, with 15.6% of its area classified as built-up, while Abia followed closely behind with 15.5%. Ogun, Enugu, Osun, Rivers, and Delta/Ekiti also made it to the top ten list, indicating substantial development in these states.
While the report focused on specific regions, it highlighted the overall progress in the southeastern (SE), southern (SS), and southwestern (SW) regions of Nigeria. These regions showcased a higher concentration of built-up areas compared to others, underscoring the ongoing urbanization and economic development in these parts of the country.
