Anambra Workers Seek Divine Intervention Over Minimum Wage

The Organized Labour in Anambra State has announced a prayer session for its members on Friday, November 1, 2024.
The session aims to address lingering issues surrounding the minimum wage payment in the state.

The prayer session, scheduled for 10 am at the Teachers House (NUT) behind Prof. Kenneth Dike E. Library in Awka, will serve as an opportunity to update members on the latest developments regarding the minimum wage and consequential adjustments implementation within the state.

In a statement signed by Comrades Sir Humphrey E. Nwafor (KSJI), NLC Chairman, Chris Ogbonna, TUC Chairman, Gaius Chukwuka, NLC Secretary (JP), and Barrister Cmr. Alex Ebi (JP), TUC Secretary, the workers expressed gratitude to Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his responsiveness and commitment to their welfare, particularly his acceptance of the N70,000 net minimum wage demand.

The workers, however, raised concerns about the consequential adjustments for employees on Levels 08 to 16, calling for further adjustments to reflect seniority and cadre differences, and proportional compensation aligned with roles and responsibilities.

Additionally, they demanded the inclusion of domestic servants for Levels 15 and 16, citing customary practices.

The Labour Council urged the government to rectify this oversight.

The workers also appreciated the Governor’s approval for a Cash Award of N10,000 to all pensioners in Anambra State starting from October 2024.

They accepted the salary structure for Levels 1 to 7, addressing junior-level employees’ needs.

Our correspondent gathered that the minimum wage issue has delayed this month’s salary, which ordinarily would have been ready by the 25th of October.”
