The disability community in Enugu State under the auspices of Joint National Association of Persons with Disability, (JONAPWD), has expressed strong rejection for the Nigeria Custom Service, NSC’s condition which prohibits individuals with physical disabilities from applying for vacancies.

JONAPWD, Enugu State Chapter in a statement signed by its chairman, Onyebuchi Mba, described the condition, which was contained in the service’s publication, stating that “applicants must not physically or mentally challenge”, as discriminatory and violates the principles of inclusion and respect for human dignity.

The statement argues that the Nigeria Custom Service’s recruitment process contradicts the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and Nigeria’s Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act of 2018, which all emphasize the importance of equal opportunities and non-discrimination for individuals with disabilities.

“We urge the Nigeria Custom Service to reverse this discriminatory and outdated condition and ensure that their recruitment process is inclusive and accessible to all qualified candidates, regardless of their physical abilities.

“This would not only be a step towards compliance with international and national laws but also a demonstration of the organization’s commitment to diversity and equal opportunities.

“It is essential that the Nigeria Custom Service takes immediate action to address this discriminatory requirement and ensures that their recruitment process aligns with the principles of inclusion, diversity, and respect for human dignity,” Mba demanded.
