Traditional ruler of Awka Kingdom, Obi Gibson Nwosu, Ezeuzu II has called on traditional rulers across the state to always verify the characters and pedigree of individuals they confer chieftaincy titles.
This he noted, will ensure the preservation of the traditional institution, which remains the pride of the people.
Obi Nwosu was speaking on Friday, during a World Press Conference on the state of the community, Anambra State and Nigeria, held at the Ezeuzu palace in Awka.
The monarch’s advice is coming on the heels of recent chieftaincy title conferments, which many quarters have queried how justifiable they are, considering the questionable character of the recipients.
Ezeuzu Awka, who spoke through the Traditional Prime Minister of the Community, Chief Benjamin Okoye, said it has become important for monarchs to be vigilant in deciding beneficiaries of Chieftaincy titles, so as not to wittingly bestow honour on persons with questionable character.
He noted that the Awka Kingdom under his reign, would continue to adhere to established rules and regulations in all its activities, including cultural festivals.
The monarch reiterated an earlier call on the state government to establish a blacksmith city in Awka, where people could learn the craft of blacksmithing.
According to him, when established, the facility would attract both local and foreign investors, create revenue channels for the state government and open up job opportunities for the youths.
“Awka kingdom is the citadel of blacksmithing across the world. It is on record that the magnificent gate of Buckingham Palace, the residence of the queen of England, was constructed by two Awka indigenes.
“Since then, Awka has maintained its position as the leader of the blacksmith industry with great passion.
“it is in recognition of this valuable cultural heritage that we call on the state government to invest in developing the blacksmithing trade, through the establishment of a Blacksmith city in Awka,” he said.
Obi Nwosu commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for his unwavering commitment to transforming Awka.
He added that his initiatives, including the construction of inter- and intra-city roads, the new Government House and lodge, Awka fun city, a shopping mall, proposed five-star hotels, and the appointment of more Awka indigenes into his administration, have given the community a sense of belonging.
Acknowledging the ravages of crime including cult and land grabbing-related crimes in the community, the monarch urged the governor to do more concerning the security of life and property within Awka and the state in general.
“Awka kingdom advises mischief makers in Awka supporting any kind of illegality in any guise, including issues of chieftaincy to stop dancing naked thereby bringing disgrace to Awka and the state.
“They should obey the laws governing the selection and appointment of traditional rulers in the state.
“Awka, being a peace-loving community, reassures Governor Soludo of its unwavering support at all times. We will also continue to provide a conducive environment for people to conduct their businesses without fear.
“We also call on our youths to avoid actions that could hinder potential investments in the community. Investments in Awka will go a long way in creating job opportunities for our people,” Ezeuzu said.
On the upcoming Anambra Governorship election, Obi Nwosu urged politicians to play the game with decorum, warning them against turning the state into a war zone in pursuit of their ambitions.
The World Press Conference was attended by members of the Eze-Uzu-in-Council, Ndi Ozo and Ndi Nze, the chairmen of all the 33 villages in the town, and the Umuada Eze Uzu.
