Anambra Government House Gets New Name.

By Izunna Okafor, Awka

Barely one month after its inauguration, the Anambra State Government has officially renamed the newly-commissioned Government House Mini City in Awka and rolled out a fresh wave of more capital projects and institutional reforms as part of efforts to deepen good governance and infrastructural development across the state.

The developments were among the key resolutions reached during the meeting of the Anambra State Executive Council (ANSEC), held on Monday, June 2, 2025 — the third to be convened in the newly-inaugurated Government House Mini City in Awka.

According to a press statement issued on Tuesday by the State’s Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, the Government House Mini City will henceforth be known as “Light House Awka” — a name deliberately chosen to align with Anambra State’s identity as the Light of the Nation. The naming, the statement noted, followed extensive deliberations within the Council over a fitting title for the expansive new administrative complex, which Governor Soludo has frequently described as “a functional centre of governance.”

In the same meeting, ANSEC took stock of the recent spectacular International Children’s Day celebration held on May 27 at the Solution Fun City, during which thousands of children from across the state converged. The Council applauded the children for their exemplary conduct despite the mammoth crowd that graced the colourful event.

As part of its institutional strengthening agenda, the Executive Council also approved the immediate establishment of the Anambra State Electricity Regulatory Commission. This is in line with the provisions of the newly-assented Anambra State Electricity Act, aimed at domestically regulating and boosting electricity distribution and oversight in the state. The Council further directed the launch of a recruitment drive for competent professionals to form the technical backbone of the new commission.

Further asserting its stance on law enforcement and child protection, ANSEC resolved that all premises used as holding places for child beggars in the state would be sealed and confiscated henceforth, in accordance with the Anambra Homeland Security Law 2025. The move is part of broader reforms to curtail street begging and protect vulnerable children from exploitation.

Meanwhile, in the area of physical development, the State Government approved the award of multiple new contracts, in line with its sustained momentum in infrastructural investments. Among the contracts is the construction of a Warehouse for Pharmaceutical Grade Kaolin at the Anambra State Kaolin Plant, Ukpor. The contract, valued at ₦190,482,467.94, was awarded to Strata Projects Ltd and is expected to be completed within eight weeks of mobilization.

Closely following is the supply and installation of a 750 KVA transformer at the same Kaolin Plant, Ukpor, awarded to Zamlic Ventures Ltd at a contract sum of ₦110,114,510.60, with a completion timeline of six weeks from the date of mobilization.

Further entrenching its commitment to security and urban orderliness, ANSEC also approved the procurement and supply of new official uniforms and operational gears for officers of the Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra (OCHA Brigade) the state’s enforcement agency. The contract, valued at ₦155,653,550.00, was awarded to Analiro Enterprises Ltd.

Describing the meeting as “impactful and strategic,” Commissioner Mefor emphasized that the flurry of decisions and approvals marks another milestone in the Soludo administration’s “Anambra Rebirth” agenda — a vision to redefine governance, rebuild state institutions, and restore the moral and civic culture of the people.

He further noted that these decisions reflect Governor Soludo’s commitment to creating a modern, secure, economically vibrant, and socially reoriented Anambra, driven by strategic investment and people-centered governance.

The naming of the Light House Awka, he added, is not just symbolic but marks a significant step in institutional branding, designed to inspire public service excellence, embody the Soludo Solution philosophy, and establish a lasting legacy for future administrations.

Recall that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday, May 8, commissioned the Anambra State’s new government house, alongside other signature projects of the Soludo Administration in the state. This came 34 years after the state had used what has been popularly described as makeshift yard as government house.
