First indigenous Pharmaceutical company in Nigeria,May & Baker Nigeria Plc has announced plans to establish a new facility in Anambra State as part of its investment in the state’s economy and commitment to expand its local manufacturing footprint.

According to a statement, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of May & Baker, Patrick Ajah, disclosed this during the 2025 Annual Conference of the Association of Community Pharmacists of Nigeria held recently in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Ajah disclosed this while receiving the Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, at the company’s exhibition stand.

He revealed that in addition to its current depot operation in Onitsha, the company is “in the process of building its facility in Onitsha as well.”

Ajah reaffirmed May & Baker’s position as the first pharmaceutical company in Nigeria and emphasised its commitment to local innovation and manufacturing. “We are heavily invested in producing quality medications locally and developing products from Nigerian research,” he said.

Soludo, who lauded the company’s innovation drive, expressed delight that most of the drugs on display were locally produced at the May & Baker Pharmacentre in Ota, Ogun State.

“I am impressed that these drugs are made in Nigeria, and the innovation I see here is commendable,” Soludo stated after visiting the stand.

Ajah also highlighted May & Baker’s investment in herbal drug production through a dedicated herbal facility, which utilises research from Nigerian scientists and indigenous plants.

He noted that the facility produces products such as Roveda, made from bitter-leaf and developed by the Vice Chancellor of Benson Idahosa University, Prof. Ernest Izevbigie, and Niclovix, a product of the Nigerian Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development in Abuja.

He noted that the products are being commercialised by May & Baker and reflect the company’s focus on blending science, local resources, and indigenous knowledge to drive pharmaceutical innovation.
