The Senate has officially sworn-in Chief Emmanuel Nwachukwu as the Senator representing the good people of Anambra South senatorial districts at the National Assembly.
This is coming more than 14 months after the Anambra South district has remained without a representative at the Senate, following the tragic death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, who died on July 27, 2024, in London after a brief illness.
Senator Nwachukwu of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) emerged as Ubah’s replacement after a landslide victory in the August 16 senatorial by-election in the state, where he polled a total of 90,408 votes to defeat his co-contestants.
Following the resumption of the Senate from recess, the Ukpor Nnewi South-born financial expert was, on Wednesday, October 8, sworn-in at the floor of the Red Chamber, where the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Ojo, administered the oaths of office and allegiance, during a plenary presided over by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.
Senator Nwachukwu was sworn-in alongside the new senator representing Edo Central, Joseph Ikpea, who was elected to fill the vacant seat left by its former occupier, Senator Monday Okpebholo, who is now the Governor of Edo State.
Welcoming the two new senators, the Senate President, Akpabio, congratulated and urged them to familiarise themselves with and abide by the Senate’s standing rules in the discharge of their legislative duties.
While also advising the new lawmakers to properly study the 1999 Constitution and the Senate Standing Orders as amended, the Senate President, who reminded them that the Senate is a family of the most elite club in the world, further urged them to remain focused and do those things that will make the country great, as they are now Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and no longer carrying the name of their parties.
This reporter, Izunna Okafor, gathered that, with this latest swearing-in, APC Senators will now be 71, PDP 28, LP 5, NNPP 1, SDP 2 and APGA 2, totaling 109 senators, with no more vacant seat in the Senate.
