A South Africa–based Nigerian who was kidnapped in Enugu State has escaped from his captors’ den in Anambra State and was subsequently rescued by security operatives led by the Nigeria Police Force.

The victim was rescued on Thursday by police-led joint security operatives during a routine visibility patrol around the Isulo axis of Orumba South Local Government Area, Anambra State.

Narrating his ordeal to the police after his rescue, the victim disclosed that he was abducted on 1 January 2026 in the evening hours from his hometown by a gang of six armed men who reportedly wore face masks to conceal their identities.

He was rescued by operatives attached to the Forward Operating Base (FOB), Aguata, in the early hours of Thursday.

The victim revealed that he is a Nigerian citizen and a native of Obinagu–Isikweachi in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu State, but is currently based in South Africa.

He further stated that the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of Forty Million Naira (₦40,000,000) from his wife and relatives before he managed to escape from their hideout.

In a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Anambra State Police Command, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, it was confirmed that the victim successfully escaped from the kidnappers’ den, leading to his eventual rescue by the joint security operatives.

According to the police spokesperson, the victim has been properly debriefed and has since been reunited with his family.

SP Tochukwu added that the command is currently working with actionable intelligence provided by the victim to identify and dismantle the criminal hideout in the area and to arrest those responsible for the crime.

The Anambra State Police Command reiterated its commitment to proactive and intelligence-driven policing aimed at ensuring the safety and security of residents. Further developments will be communicated as investigations progress.
