The Anambra State government has introduced 15 entrepreneurial subjects into Junior Secondary Schools across the state to boost the practical skills and entrepreneurial mindsets of students.
Some of the subjects introduced include Solar Installation, Garment Making, GSM Repairs, Agriculture and Processing, Plumbing, Tiling, POP Installation, Event Management, Bakery, Hairstyling, Make-up, Interior Design, CCTV/Intercom Installation, Digital Literacy, IT and Robotics, among others.
Speaking during the introduction of the subjects at Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, on Friday, the Chairman of the Post-Primary Schools Service Commission, Prof. Nkechi Ikediugwu, said the aim is to prepare the students not just for the theoretical aspect of learning, but also for the practical ways of creating value for themselves.
Ikediugwu said this initiative would prepare the students not just to be job seekers, but job and value creators aimed at making them contribute meaningfully to the economic development of the state and the country at large.
She said, “In today’s rapidly changing world, education must go beyond theory and examinations to equip students with practical skills, creativity, innovation and an entrepreneurial mindset.
“The goal of this is to prepare learners not just to seek jobs, but to create value, generate employment and contribute meaningfully to the economic development of the state and the country.
“The introduction of these subjects is a way to boost the practical skills and entrepreneurial mindsets of students in the Junior Secondary Schools. The subjects are practical-based.
“With these entrepreneurial subjects, the state is on the path to transform the students economically, as traditional academic instruction and examination is no longer sufficient to prepare children for the future.”
Additionally, in his address, Cyril Nwuche, a staff member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, stated that the introduction of entrepreneurial subjects has put the state government on a path to transform learners economically and socially.
Nwuche spoke on, “Building entrepreneurial secondary schools: Why every school needs an entrepreneurship club”, adding that, “This practical learning initiative is on the path to transform Anambra State economically and socially as traditional academic instruction is no longer sufficient to prepare children for the future.”
Recall Anambra State government had announced the recruitment of 8,115 teachers in a major stride towards revitalising public education across the state.
The Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in Anambra State, Chiamaka Nnake, said the move is part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s comprehensive strategy to enhance learning outcomes, bridge teacher shortages, and ensure quality education is accessible to all children in the state.
“We’re just 42 months in office, and we have recruited 8,115 teachers. in all our public schools. Usually, it’s not typical government recruitment, because it’s actually an open source.
“We have people from across the country who applied. That was how the recruitment was done,” she said.
