The Anambra International Cargo Airport has recorded a total of 8,624 flights since it was commissioned on December 7, 2021, by former Governor Willie Obiano.

The airport, which serves both commercial and private aviation, has also handled more than 600,000 passengers since it commenced operations.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the airport, Mr. Martin Nwafor, stated this in an interview and confirmed that flight activities increased significantly during peak periods such as the Christmas season.

Mr. Nwafor noted that the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo has upgraded the airport’s facilities, including the completion of the fire service unit, which was not fully developed at inception. He said the unit is now equipped with three new fire trucks.

He added that vandalised runway lights have been replaced, enabling night flights, while a water truck and other upgrades have been provided. According to him, these improvements have helped elevate the airport from Category Five to Category Seven, with plans underway to achieve Category Nine status within the year, alongside full cargo operations.

The airport managing director also appealed to the state government to assist in providing a ceiling for the terminal building to allow full use of the departure hall. He explained that the absence of roof insulation causes excessive heat, making it difficult for the installed air conditioners to cool the space, thereby necessitating the use of a temporary departure area.

Mr. Nwafor urged Ndi Anambra to patronise the airport, describing them as business-minded people who should take advantage of the facility provided by the state government. He expressed concern that many residents still use airports in other states, which he said boosts external revenue at the expense of Anambra.

Some passengers arriving from Abuja, including Chief Ndubuisi Nwobu and Mr. Nonso Orakwe, expressed satisfaction with the services at the airport. They praised former Governor Willie Obiano for initiating the project and Governor Chukwuma Soludo for sustaining and improving the facility for the benefit of Ndi Anambra.
