The Labour Party’s governorship candidate in the 2025 Anambra State election, Mr. George Moghalu, has officially resigned his membership of the party, marking a significant development in the state’s political landscape.
The resignation was confirmed on Monday through a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Mr. Johnson Okoye. The statement, titled “Moghalu Resigns Membership of Labour Party,” announced that the former candidate had formally communicated his decision to the party.
According to the statement, Moghalu submitted a personally signed resignation letter dated January 26, 2026, to the chairman of the Labour Party in his ward at Uruagu, Nnewi, Anambra State. The resignation took immediate effect upon submission.
The former Managing Director of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) did not disclose the reasons behind his decision to leave the party. However, his letter was described as courteous and appreciative, reflecting a tone of gratitude rather than confrontation.
In the letter, Moghalu thanked the Labour Party at the ward, state, and national levels for granting him the platform to contest the November 2025 off-cycle governorship election in Anambra State. He acknowledged the cooperation, goodwill, and support he received from party leaders and members throughout the electioneering period.
Part of the letter read:
“I bring you the good wishes of my family and write to formally inform you of my resignation from the Labour Party, effective January 26, 2026.
“Let me also thank the party, through you, for providing me the opportunity to use the Labour Party platform to contest the last governorship election of our state.”
Moghalu further expressed his appreciation by urging the ward chairman to convey his regards to other party members, stating:
“Please accept, as always, the assurance of my sincere regards and kindly convey same to the members.”
As of the time of filing this report, Moghalu has not indicated his next political destination or whether he plans to align with another political party. His resignation has nonetheless fueled speculation about possible realignments ahead of future political contests in Anambra State.
