Anambra Assembly reinstates suspended Ayamelum Lawmaker, Udemezue

The Anambra State House of Assembly has reinstated the suspended member representing Ayamelum Constituency, Hon Bernard Udemezue who was suspended for six months.

 

Recall that during the plenary of Tuesday, 17th February, 2026, the Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Somtochukwu Udeze directed the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges to review the Assembly’s Resolution No. ANHA/RES/2025/29 of 26th November, 2025, bothering on the “Unparliamentary Activities of Hon Udemezue.

The Major thrust was to establish whether or not Hon Bernard Udemezue has complied with the provisions of the said House Resolution.

Presenting their report in a resumed plenary on Thursday in Awka, the Chairman House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, Hon Ikenna Ofodeme who doubles as the Majority Leader of the House, said the committee met and thoroughly reviewed the said resolutions to determine he level of compliance by Hon Bernard Udemezue.

 

He noted that Hon Udemezue complied with the provisions of the House Resolution and apologised to Mr Speaker and members of the 8th Assembly within the five (5) days given to him to do so through a letter dated 27th November 2025 with ref no ANHA/014/033.

 

Ofodeme said Udemezue equally obeyed the order not to be seen around the premises of Anambra State House of Assembly Awka during the three months second batch suspension.

 

According to the Majority Leader, Hon Udemezue was asking for his reinstatement and that his allowances be paid henceforth, effective from the month of March, 2026 as well as be allowed to have full access to the Anambra State House of Assembly complex to join with the activities of the fellow lawmakers.

 

The member representing Ogbaru 1 Constituency, Hon Noble Igwe moved a motion for the adoption of the report of the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, and was seconded by Hon Tony Mobike representing Aguata 2 constituency.

 

To this end, the suspended lawmaker Udemezue is expected to resume his Legislative duties from next week.

 

Udemezue was six months ago, shared social media videos where he made several uncomplimentary remarks about the administration of Governor Charles Chukwuma Soludo and that of the State Assembly.

 

He was subsequently suspended following a resolution of the House on August 28, 2025, after the consideration of a report by the Committee on Ethics and Privileges which indicted him of alleged unparliamentary conduct.

 

Subsequently, the lawmaker was handed an additional three-months suspension for failing to comply with the initial directives of the House. The extended suspension, which commenced on November 26, 2025, is scheduled to lapse on February 26, 2026
