The Federal Road Safety Corp, has distributed food items and other relief materials to vulnerable persons, accident victims and tricycle operators in Onitsha and its environs.
The Corp embarked on the food distribution in collaboration with Lovebite Foods Ltd.
The aim of the outreach is to make life meaningful to the underprivileged and accident victims during the Lenten season
Lent is 40 days of fasting, abstinence, and repentance, observed in imitation of Jesus Christ’s time of prayer and testing in the wilderness before His crucifixion.
The team also visited accident victims in hospitals to extend humanitarian support.
Speaking after the exercise, the Onitsha Unit Commander of the FRSC, ACC Godwin Odoh, said the gesture aligned with the spirit of love associated with the season and was aimed at giving vulnerable members of society a sense of belonging.
Odoh noted that the corps also used the opportunity to appreciate members of the public for their cooperation in ensuring safety and the free flow of traffic, particularly along the River Niger corridor, during the last Christmas and New Year celebrations.
He commended personnel of the Command for their efforts in achieving zero traffic crashes and maintaining smooth vehicular movement during the Yuletide period.
According to him, beyond rescuing crash victims, the corps supports them during recovery by visiting them and other patients to show care within available resources.
“Normally, every year at the end of Operation Zero Traffic Crash, we appreciate our personnel by saying ‘well done.’ The Niger Bridge normally experiences gridlock during Yuletide, but last year we tackled it headlong. All our staff were deployed and worked day and night.
“So the Command deemed it necessary that these personnel be appreciated, and that is why we organised this end-of-year party/dubar, which we call ‘First Quarter Dubar.’ We are doing it in collaboration with a sponsor, the CEO of Lovebite Food and Beverages, Chief Innocent Nwosu.
“We distributed food, water and other relief materials to vulnerable persons to show love and appreciation. Beyond rescuing crash victims, the corps also supports them during recovery. It is a continuous exercise aimed at giving hope to victims,” he said.
Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of the Onitsha Unit Command, Kenechukwu Chidoka, said about 1,000 less privileged persons, tricycle operators and accident victims at Toronto Hospital benefited from the outreach.
He appreciated sponsors, including Lovebite, for partnering with the corps to show love to vulnerable people.
In his remarks, the CEO of Lovebite Food and Beverages, Chief Innocent Nwosu, who was represented by Nnenna Okoronkwo, expressed satisfaction with the initiative, saying, “To love is to share.”
He added that the company’s support for vulnerable persons would be sustained as part of efforts to show love to those who feel neglected in society.
The Manager of Toronto Hospital, Osy Mbelu, also commended the Onitsha FRSC and Lovebite for extending fellowship and support to accident victims, patients and hospital staff.
