An 80-year-old man, Paul Onwualu, has been allegedly killed in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government area of Anambra State.
The deceased, said to be among aspirants to the kingship throne in the area, died following alleged beatings by Police officers reportedly from the FCID Abuja.
According to inside sources, the policemen, who reportedly came in company of some people opposed to his aspiration, stormed the octogenarian’s residence to arrest him.
“It was in the process of arresting him that he was beaten to coma and bundled into a waiting police vehicle and whisked away to Ogidi Police Station.
“He collapsed on the way to the police station and was rushed to the Iyi-Enu Mission hospital Ogidi, where medical personnel on duty confirmed him dead,” the source said.
Wife of the deceased, Anthonia Onwualu, while lamenting the sudden death, said her husband was beaten to coma prior to his whisking away to an unknown destination.
“On Thursday, the police in company of some people who opposed my husband’s Igweship aspiration, stormed our Umusiome residence, beating my husband to coma before whisking him away to an unknown destination.
“I was later told that the policemen were on their way to Ogidi Police Station to detain him but died midway to the station.
“The opposition that came with the police to our residence scaled the perimeter fence of our compound because the gate is always under lock and key,” she cried.
The ongoing Igweship tussle, it was learnt is already pending before a High Court in Suit No. HID/72/2026 at Ogidi.
Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident.
