The Mayor of Idemili North, Chief Stanley Nkwoka (Ochendo Idemili) has announced that his administration shall introduce and promote organized school sports competition and academic quiz competitions among both primary and secondary schools within Idemili North Local Government Area.
Nkwoka made the pronouncement on Wednesday, May 27, 2026 as the LGA joined the rest of the world to mark this year’s Children’s Day celebration at the Secretariat, Ogidi.
According to him, as an administration, we in Idemili North LGA are fully aligned with the Progressive vision of Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State in promoting education, youth development and child welfare.
“The organized school sports competition and academic quiz competitions among both primary and secondary schools in Idemili North is aimed at Encouraging healthy competition among students.
“We also aim at Discovering talents in sports and academics, Promoting unity and social interaction, Building confidence and leadership qualities among our children And enhancing intellectual development.
” We believe that education goes beyond classroom learning alone. Sports and academic competitions help to develop discipline, teamwork, creativity and excellence among young people,” said Nkwoka.
Moreso,the Mayor appreciated the remarkable and transformational leadership of Governor Soludo for prioritizing the welfare and future of Anambra children through massive investment in education and healthcare sectors.
“Under the visionary leadership of Governor Soludo, Anambra State has witnessed unprecedented reforms in the education sector, especially through the introduction and sustenance of free education policy across public schools.
“The bold initiative has significantly reduced the financial burdens on parents while increasing school enrollment and and improving access to quality education for thousands of children across the state.
Furthermore, Hon Stanley Nkwoka reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sustaining free WAEC registration for selected students in public secondary schools across Idemili North LGA saying that education should never become a privilege only for the wealthy.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to pursue his or her dreams regardless of family background or financial condition. Through this initiative, we shall continue to support our students and parents while encouraging academic excellence throughout Idemili North LGA.,” Nkwoka said.
The Chairman of Idemili North Traditional Rulers Council, Igwe Barr. Dr. Emeka Onuorah of Oraukwu commended Chief Stanley Nkwoka for his initiative towards promoting the welfare and development of children.
“We thank Idemili North Mayor for accepting to register WAEC for our school children. Also, Sports competition and academic quiz competitions will foster unity, encourage healthy competition which is capable of engaging the youths positively so that they would not think of indulging in various forms of social vices that would ruin their future,” said Igwe Onuorah.
The aspirant for Idemili South LGA Chairman under the umbrella of All Progressives Grand Alliance APGA, Hon Oluchukwu Ilogbenu also advised the school children on the need to be serious with their education which is very important in shaping and preparing them as leaders of tomorrow.
“I encourage students to study hard and keep improving in whatever they are doing because when we have better students, we have better future.
“At the local government, we want to do our best to provide an enabling environment for children, conducive for learning; To partner with relevant stakeholders in education to ensure that our kids gets the best education possible to grow. We thank the Idemili North Mayor for providing such enabling environment and for following the foot print of His Excellency Prof Chukwuma Soludo, the Solution Governor of Anambra State, “said Ilogbenu.
Highlights of the Children’s Day celebration at Idemili North include Talk presentation by the National Oroentation Agency NOA on dangers of indecent dressing, drug abuse and disobedience to parents or authority, Matchpasts and cultural dance competition by school children both from Private and Public Schools.
Out of over 30 primary and secondary schools in attendance, Ogbor Primary School Ogidi emerged winners (1st position)of the Matchpasts in the Primary Schools category while Mercy Girls Secondary School Umuoji emerged overall winners (1st position) of the Matchpasts in the Secondary Schools category. Mercy Girls Secondary School Umuoji also clinched 1st position in the cultural dance competition.
