The Anambra State Government has awarded contracts worth over N1 billion for floodwater control and the equipment of a general hospital.

The state government also plans to present a bill before the State House of Assembly to regulate the activities of scrap dealers across the state.

Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday, shortly after the State Executive Council meeting held in Awka, the state capital.

He gave a breakdown of the contracts to include: “The sum of N801,674,399.75 (eight hundred and one million, six hundred and seventy-four thousand, three hundred and ninety-nine naira, seventy-five kobo only) for the construction of a floodwater diversion channel at Ezioko, Oko-Nanka, Orumba North LGA, awarded to Lebtech Construction Ltd.”

He stated that “The sum of N279,488,986.35 (two hundred and seventy-nine million, four hundred and eighty-eight thousand, nine hundred and eighty-six naira, thirty-five kobo only) is for the supply and installation of new medical equipment & accessories at the General Hospital, Oroma Etiti, was awarded to Calyzid Ventures.”

The sum of N92,693,289.65 (ninety-two million, six hundred and ninety-three thousand, two hundred and eighty-nine naira, sixty-five kobo) for the construction of general external works/landscaping at the Nwafor Orizu College of Education, Nsugbe (NOCEN), awarded to Ozoh United Ventures Nig. Ltd,” the statement read.

On the proposed law against scrap dealers in the state, Mefor said it was aimed at protecting public property and ensuring the registration of scrap dealers, following reports that public and private property were being tampered with by suspected criminals operating as scrap speculators.

“For purposes of monitoring and surveillance the coming law will require the licensing of scrap dealers, including those dealing in scrapped vehicles. The legislation follows increasing reported cases of vandalism and theft of public properties in the state,” he said.

The Executive Council also resolved that all contractors must present proof of tax compliance to participate in contract bidding, adding that the state would in turn benefit from the revenue derived from taxes paid by prospective contractors.
