The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, has called for stronger parental guidance and emotional support for young people following the suspected suicide of a 25-year-old female student in Onitsha.
The student was reportedly found dead on June 18, 2026, under circumstances suggesting suicide.
A note recovered at the scene allegedly detailed emotional distress arising from a failed relationship and multiple abortions linked to an unidentified man named Chigozie.
Reacting to the incident, the CP described the growing rate of moral decadence and other troubling social issues as a serious concern requiring collective action from families, communities, schools, religious bodies, and other stakeholders.
While noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of death, Orutugu stressed the importance of effective parenting, open communication, and close monitoring of children’s emotional and social well-being.
He urged parents and guardians to pay greater attention to behavioural changes among their children and wards, emphasizing that many societal challenges could be prevented through proper moral upbringing and support.
The Police Commissioner also called on educational institutions, community leaders, faith-based organisations, and civil society groups to strengthen mentorship and value-orientation programmes for youths.
Meanwhile, the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a comprehensive investigation.
The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and addressing emerging social issues affecting public safety.
