The Anambra State Government has defended its decision to pursue the construction of a second airport in the state, insisting that failure to begin planning now could make it impossible to secure land for such a critical infrastructure in the future.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, gave the explanation during an interview while responding to growing criticism on social media over the proposed project.
Many residents and commentators have questioned the need for another airport in the state, arguing that Anambra’s existing airport should be sufficient for present needs.
However, Ezeobi dismissed the criticisms, saying the proposal is anchored on long-term development planning rather than immediate demands.
According to him, Anambra is witnessing rapid population growth, expanding economic activities and accelerated urbanisation, making it imperative for the government to plan ahead for infrastructure that would serve future generations.
“If we don’t build a second airport now, there won’t be land for it in the future,” the commissioner said, stressing that the availability of suitable land for such a massive project would become increasingly difficult as development spreads across the state.
He explained that many major cities around the world operate multiple airports to accommodate increasing passenger traffic and economic expansion, noting that Anambra must equally prepare for its future.
Ezeobi disclosed that projections contained in the Anambra State Vision 2070 indicate that the state could require as many as three airports by the year 2070 to meet anticipated transportation needs.
He said the proposed second airport should therefore be viewed as part of a long-term strategy rather than being judged solely on present realities.
The commissioner noted that communities across the state are expanding rapidly, with increasing investments in housing, commerce and industry, adding that delaying infrastructure planning could constrain future development.
He warned that failure to acquire land and make adequate preparations for strategic projects could create serious challenges for future administrations and limit the state’s economic potential.
According to him, the Soludo administration is implementing infrastructure projects based on the long-term projections contained in the Anambra State Vision 2070 document, which anticipates significant population growth and rising demand for transportation facilities.
Ezeobi maintained that the proposed airport forms part of a broader strategy to improve connectivity, stimulate economic development and position Anambra to take advantage of future opportunities.
He urged residents to assess the project from the standpoint of long-term development planning, insisting that governments must anticipate future needs instead of waiting until existing infrastructure becomes inadequate.
