Nigeria has once again demonstrated its growing strength in international academic excellence as two outstanding young mathematicians secured Top-10 global rankings at the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), one of the world’s most prestigious and rigorous mathematics competitions.
Nigerian Director, Singapore International Mathematics Contests Centre (SIMCC), Mrs. Josiah Mercy said the competition, held in Singapore from 17–21 July 2026, brought together 2,285 of the world’s brightest students from 40 countries, representing 1,113 schools, to compete in advanced mathematical problem-solving and critical thinking challenges.
She said Nigeria’s remarkable performance was led by Agu Chijindu Chukwuka of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, who delivered an exceptional performance by winning two Gold Medals and one Bronze Medal in the Mathematics Olympiad Contest, Math Warriors, and Math Master Mind, respectively. His outstanding achievement earned him 8th place globally in the Grade 7 Mathematics Olympiad Contest, placing him among the world’s elite young mathematicians.
According to her, joining him in the global spotlight was Okpere-Udo Hallel of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, who achieved an impressive 2nd-place global ranking in the Grade 10 Mathematics Olympiad Contest.
Josiah said Okpere-Udo also won a Gold Medal in the Mathematics Olympiad Contest and a Bronze Medal in Math Warriors, further strengthening Nigeria’s reputation for producing world-class mathematical talent.
“Nigeria’s impressive medal haul was further enhanced by other outstanding performances. Nwawulu Chimgozirim Kevin, also of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State,won a Gold Medal in Math Master Mind (Lower Secondary Division). Stanley Iduate Samson of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, and Adepetu Mofopefoluwa Oluwasemilore of Jephthah Comprehensive Secondary School, Port Harcourt, each secured Gold Medals in Math Master Mind (Upper Secondary Division).
“Widely regarded as one of the world’s most demanding mathematics competitions, the Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC) is renowned for its rigorous standards, innovative problem-solving format, and its role in bringing together the finest young mathematical minds from across the globe. Success at SIMOC is internationally recognised as a mark of exceptional academic excellence.
“The prestigious award ceremony reflected the competition’s international stature, with the attendance of the Nigerian Ambassador to Singapore(Francisca Kemi Omayuli), the United States Ambassador, and ambassadors from several other participating nations, underscoring the global significance of the event.
“These outstanding achievements underscore the immense potential of Nigerian students to compete successfully with the very best in the world when provided with quality education, effective mentorship, and opportunities to excel internationally.
“They also serve as an inspiration to young Nigerians, reaffirming that excellence, discipline, perseverance, and hard work can earn global recognition while showcasing the country’s growing academic excellence on the world stage,” the statement added.
