A 4-storey building has been gutted by fire in Odoakpu, Onitsha, Anambra state.
The building, located near Central School, Onitsha was razed around 3.30pm on Thursday.
Although no life was lost in the incident, property worth millions of naira were reportedly destroyed by the inferno.
Confirming the incident, Chief Fire Officer of the state, Engr. Chiketa Chukwudi attributed the cause of the fire to electricity surge, adding that soon arrival of firefighters prevented further damage to the building and surrounding properties.
He said, “Anambra State Fire Service on Thursday, 17th September, 2026, responded to a fire incident at a four-storey building near Central School, Odoakpu, Onitsha.
“The distress call was received at 1546 hours, and firefighters arrived at the scene at 1610 hours, immediately commencing firefighting operations to contain the fire and prevent its spread.
“The fire, according to preliminary information, was caused by an electricity surge.
“The firefighters successfully brought the situation under control, thereby saving lots of properties and preventing further damage to the building and surrounding properties.
“No life was lost, and no injuries sustained in the incident.
“The operation was concluded and the firefighters withdrew from the scene at 1746 hours of the same day.
“The Anambra State Fire Service continues to urge members of the public to promptly report fire emergencies and ensure that electrical installations and appliances are handled and maintained properly.
“Fire kills, but we can prevent it.”
