The various unions of commercial transporters in Anambra State, which have operated for many years in disunity, have now been united under the aegis of the Anambra State Bus Drivers Welfare Association. During the inaugural meeting of the harmonized association convened by the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Ibuzo, the various factions of transporters signed a memorandum of understanding, birthing the new, strong and unified union of Anambra transporters.
In his address to the transporters, the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Edward Ibuzo, expressed the government’s determination to bring commercial bus drivers together so as to strengthen partnership with the government. “The inauguration represents our determination to bring commercial bus drivers together under a coordinated platform that promotes their welfare while strengthening government supervision, accountability and service delivery,” Ibuzo said.
Decrying the old order, the Commissioner said that the inauguration has now closed the doors against “multiple associations, competing interests and, in some cases, leadership disputes that make effective coordination difficult. Our objective is therefore unity, not division, service not exploitation; and organization, not disorder,” he said.
The Commissioner further charged the inaugural chairman of the association, Mr. Moses Ohanebo, to lead with fairness, transparency and inclusiveness, assuring of the State Government’s support in line with Governor Soludo’s agenda to organize and mainstream the informal sectors in Anambra State. In response, the association thanked the Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Ibuzo, and the Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, CFR, for demonstrating commitment to the well-being of transporters in Anambra State. They also assured the government of continued support.
