The Anambra State Government has defended the ongoing rehabilitation of the 18.6km Nwagu Agulu–Nnobi–Nnewi Road, insisting that the removal of damaged sections for reconstruction is part of a planned engineering intervention and not evidence of road failure.
The Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure gave the clarification after inspecting the project amid concerns raised online about the condition of the road.
According to the commissioner, recent flood warnings and water-related impacts necessitated intervention on affected sections of the road.
He said the sections were being prepared for reconstruction, cement-soil stabilisation and proper re-asphalting to improve their strength and durability.
He explained that the government had opted to address the affected sections through appropriate engineering measures rather than resort to temporary repairs that might not withstand future challenges.
“Our priority is not to cover up defects with temporary fixes, but to address affected sections properly and strengthen the road for lasting performance,” the commissioner said.
He acknowledged public concerns about the road’s condition and welcomed constructive feedback, but urged residents to understand the purpose of the ongoing engineering work before drawing conclusions from photographs of sections undergoing rehabilitation.
The commissioner reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving road infrastructure across urban and rural communities, noting that better road connectivity was essential for community development and economic activities.
He also called on residents to support government infrastructure initiatives and take collective responsibility for protecting public facilities.
The government’s explanation comes amid public scrutiny of the road’s condition, with attention focused on the execution of the rehabilitation work and the durability of the repaired sections.
