Labour Party (LP) senatorial candidate for Anambra Central, Ven. Tochukwu Ikezue has called on former Vice President, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to support Peter Obi’s presidential ambition in 2027, saying such a move would immortalise his name as hero of democracy.
Ikezue made the appeal shortly after attending the inauguration of the Women’s Wing of the Urban Community Voters Association of Nigeria (UCVAN) at Ekwulummiri Town Hall, Awada, Obosi, Anambra State.
He expressed appreciation to the leadership of the association, particularly its General Woman Leader, Lady Amaka Reuben, for the invitation and for organising what he described as a well-attended and impactful event.
The LP candidate also commended the African Democratic Congress (ADC) House of Representatives candidate for Idemili North and South Federal Constituency, Hon. Ifebi Nnamdi, for attending the ceremony and demonstrating commitment to women empowerment.
Speaking on the 2027 presidential election, Ikezue urged Atiku to rise to the occasion as an elder statesman by supporting Obi, whom he described as possessing the qualities needed to lead Nigeria at this critical period.
He expressed concern that Nigeria had yet to produce a president born after the country’s independence in 1960, arguing that the trend reflected the continued recycling of political leadership and the exclusion of younger generations from the nation’s highest office.
According to him, the situation should concern Nigerians, particularly as the country’s youthful population deserves an opportunity to contribute meaningfully to national leadership.
Ikezue described Obi as a credible and competent candidate, citing his commitment, character, capacity and compassion as qualities that distinguish him.
“If Alhaji Atiku Abubakar steps up and supports Peter Obi, history will forever be kind to him. It will endear him to the Nigerian youths forever as a selfless statesman.
“Such a decision will help create opportunities for younger generations, including Atiku’s children, to aspire to the presidency in the future,” he said.
The senatorial candidate called on patriotic elders across political divides to place national interest above partisan considerations and support the movement for what he described as a new Nigeria that is possible.
At the UCVAN event, Ikezue praised the association’s Women’s Wing for its initiative, expressing appreciation to its leadership for promoting women’s participation and empowerment.
