For his courage, consistency of conviction and as a defender of what is best for democracy, Dr. George Moghalu is ANAMBRA PERSON OF THE WEEK.
Dr George Moghalu is the Managing Director of Nigeria Inland Waterways Authority. He is a time tested politician and one of the most consistent politicians in Nigeria. His loyalty to conscience and party is legendary. In fact, record puts him in good stead as one of the most loyal party men in Igbo land, having been in one political party since the inception of democracy in 1999.
He joined the ANPP and remained there through its metamorphosis to what is known today as the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Dr. Moghalu’s dedication, patience and commitment to a political course are unrivalled and his style of pursuing ideals remains the best way to contribute and benefit from a political configuration.
This week, the ANAMBRA PEOPLE has selected Dr George Moghalu as the ANAMBRA PERSON OF THE WEEK. This is as a result of the remarkable impact the judgment of the Supreme Court in regards to George Moghalu and Andy Uba has on our jurisprudence. The judgment reaffirms the decision of the High Court in a suit marked FHC/ABJ/CS/648/2021. His Lordship Justice Inyang Ekwo of the High Court maintained that the primary election that saw Andy Ụba emerging as flag bearer of the APC in the Anambra governorship election was done in substantial breach of both electoral guidelines for the conduct of governorship primary election as well as the party’s constitution. This judgment disqualified Andy Ụba and the APC in the November 6th Anambra governorship election.
Ndi Anambra and Prof Chukwuma Soludo are the biggest beneficiaries of this legal win.
The judgment fundamentally damages Andy Uba’s case at the election tribunal. In the eyes of the law it could be implied that Andy Uba has no locus at all to present his matter at the tribunal since by the judgment of the court, himself and the APC are not qualified to participate in the contest abinitio.
What then is the Benefit to Soludo and Ndị Anambra?
There’s nothing that disorganizes a new governor like legal cases at the tribunal. Most times, the governor channels the resources of the state in pursuing legal cases at the tribunal.
Today, Soludo isn’t distracted; he is focused to deliver quality governance to Ndị Anambra. In this period of security challenges and paucity of funds in the state, Soludo needs all attention, resources and focus to get the job done.
Furthermore, this brave judgment has strengthened our democracy, particularly as it regards to democratic mechanism of political parties.
It has put a hammer on the political parties to follow due process, constitutional provisions of parties and INEC guidelines in the conduct of party primaries. Moghalu’s courage to become a lone voice against injustice even when other aspirants were lily-livered to pursue the case is commendable.
This achievement of Dr Moghalu is bold and audacious. He was courageous, patient and determined to follow through the legal processes, from the High Court to the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. This has reflected the values and character he stands for as a respected Nigerian politician.
His impact and legacy in our political space will be indelible for many years to come. He has made his own mark in our political history.
