Anambra Woman Receives Highest Award in Medicine from Ghanaian President

Nigeria’s most celebrated female medical doctor and the doyen of paediatrics, Prof Ifeoma Egbuonu has received the College Gold Medal Award in Accra, Ghana for her numerous impact towards the development of the medical profession in West Africa, ANAMBRA PEOPLE reports.

The College Gold Medal Award is the highest merit award by The West African College of Physicians. She was presented the award of the college by the Ghanaian president, His Excellency, Nana Akufo-Addo at the recently concluded 46th Annual Congress of the West African College of Physicians held at Cedi Conference Center, University of Ghana, Legon, Accra, Ghana.

The annual congress, a 3 day meeting was held under the theme ‘Health and Well-Being Amidst a Prolonged Pandemic-Implications for Physicians and Patients’.

Prof Egbuonu, a former consultant of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Funds (UNICEF) as well as the World Health Organization (WHO) is the first female president of West African College of Physicians since the inception of the College in 1976. She is also the first Nigerian woman inducted as one of the 82 Foundation Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Medicine.

Prof Ifeoma Egbuonu is the daughter of one of Nigeria’s foremost female politicians, late Chief Mrs Janet Mokelu OON. She is a consultant paediatrician who joined Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 1993 and rose to the rank of a Professor in 2005. She has contributed immensely to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical training in Africa.
