United Nigeria Airlines, a rapidly expanding aviation player in Nigeria, founded by Prof Obiora Okonkwo has taken a giant leap toward becoming a prominent global carrier with its recent admission into the International Air Transport Association (IATA). The esteemed membership, granted in a letter dated October 9, 2023, by IATA Director General William Walsh, marks a significant milestone for the airline.

In a press release issued by Achilleus-Chud Uchegbu, the Head of Corporate Communications at United Nigeria Airlines, Walsh expressed his delight in welcoming the airline into the IATA community. The IATA’s mission revolves around representing, leading, and serving the aviation industry, uniting approximately 300 airlines from over 120 countries to shape a safe, secure, and sustainable global air transport sector.

Director General Walsh underscored the IATA’s key priorities, encompassing the enhancement of global safety, the promotion of sustainable industry growth, driving digital transformation, and becoming the trusted source for aviation data. He voiced his optimism that United Nigeria Airlines, its workforce, and passengers would reap the benefits of this newfound IATA membership.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of United Nigeria Airlines, Mazi Osita Okonkwo, regards this membership as a monumental achievement, reinforcing the airline’s commitment to aligning with international aviation standards. He emphasized the airline’s dedication to exceeding customer expectations in crucial areas like safety, swift service delivery, and top-tier customer service.

This latest accolade follows the airline’s IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification obtained in May, validating its strict adherence to industry-leading safety protocols. United Nigeria Airlines is currently focusing on expanding its operations, with plans to launch direct flights to Accra, Ghana, and various other regional destinations. The airline is set to bolster its fleet with the imminent arrival of two Airbus A320 aircraft in mid-October and early December, followed by the introduction of E-190 Embraer aircraft in the first quarter of 2024.

Furthermore, United Nigeria Airlines has secured approval from the Federal Government of Nigeria to commence direct flight operations to North America, Europe, and the Middle East. This significant development positions the airline for further growth and elevates its global recognition within the aviation industry.

The consistent achievements of United Nigeria Airlines, such as its IATA membership and IOSA certification, underscore its unwavering commitment to providing safe and exceptional air travel experiences for passengers. These milestones cement its position as a leading airline not only in Nigeria but on the global stage.
