Pathetic story of Onitsha bread hawker

By Ononye VC

Fellow Nigerian citizens, during the week, precisely last Friday,I spotted this little boy who told me his name was Timothy.

He was standing on a school gate and watching other little boys of his age or thereabout running up and down classrooms and an open space obviously with thoughts on when to be like them doing the same thing.

His article of trade, a fully loaded basin of loaves of bread balanced delicately on his head while he admired his fellow age mates attending school.

It was a pathetic sight! I alighted from my car, called and interviewed him.

He said his name was Timothy and that he doesn’t go to school and lives with his aunt.

He told me that they live in Akpaka community close to Onitsha where he trekked over three kilometers to sell bread at Ose Market, Onitsha daily, that he only ate once daily and return home about 9pm after selling the bread. A lady who usually saw him confirmed the story to me.

I was consumed with emotion and sympathy for the plight of the little boy.
Many of them like that are suffering this ugly abuse today and people in government, the law enforcement agents turn a blind eye and only tell us about welfare of the people on radio, tv, newspaper and social media.

This is heartbreaking!
Please let me recommend that the bread factory who owns the brand the boy is carrying on his head search for and ensure that the little boy goes to school by awarding him scholarship to start school.

They should also ensure he has all it takes to go to school. Let’s see how it goes. Godbless.
